Stage

The Royal Dutch Skating Federation (KNSB) launched the innovative Golden Relays project last year. The aim of this project is to bring all three teams of the Dutch short track team to the finals of the Olympic Games in Milan, with the goal of winning at least one gold medal. Within this project, the focus is on the exchange moment between skaters during the relay, a race format where team members must pass the baton. To train more effectively for these exchanges and make them more efficient, we will delve into biomechanical analyses using IMU systems in the coming season. In collaboration with TeamNL specialists, we have therefore issued an assignment for a student interested in this subject.

Requirements:

  • An unfinished, relevant university (master's) program.
  • Availability of an internal internship supervisor from the program with an affinity for this internship.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with the operation of IMU and sensor technology (preferably experience with Xsense).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and experience with Python and/or other programming skills.
  • The ability to be present weekly in Utrecht and/or Dordrecht to support the training sessions of the KNSB Talent Teams Short Track.
  • The ability to occasionally attend measurements at various KNSB Talent Teams Short Track locations in the Netherlands (Heerenveen, Utrecht, and Dordrecht).
  • Affinity with working in sports (preferred: experience/knowledge in short track skating).
  • Sufficient command of the Dutch language to communicate effectively with Dutch junior athletes.

What we offer

  • An internship position for 20 weeks, 38 hours per week.
  • A start date in September 2024 and an end date in March 2025.
  • A workplace on location: partly in Utrecht or Thialf, partly at Papendal.
  • Supervision by the Embedded Scientist Short Track of the KNSB and an expert in performance & technology from TeamNL.
  • The opportunity to apply your research directly to the three KNSB Talent Teams Short Track, located in Heerenveen, Thialf, and Dordrecht.
  • The chance to gain experience in top-level sports by joining the KNSB Talent Teams weekly.
  • A practically oriented research assignment that will genuinely contribute to improving the performance of TeamNL Short Track towards the Olympic Games in Milan.

Interested?

Are you interested in an internship with one of the largest sports federations in the Netherlands and would you like to take a behind-the-scenes look at TeamNL? Do you have an affinity for our sport, biomechanics, and programming, and do you think you can make a difference towards Milan? Then this challenging internship might be something for you. Send your CV and cover letter by July 5, 2024, to project leader Berber Bergsma via b.bergsma@knsb.nl, mentioning ‘Golden Relay Biomechanics’.
